I am sunburnt in interesting ways. Not for me the effortless tan. Oh no. And for some reason, I can't even manage an all-over burn.

Instead, I have funny burnt patches and equally funny unburnt patches. And I was wearing sunscreen, too, so I'm not entirely sure how this burning occurred. Nevertheless, it did and I'm vaguely irritated by it. Not to worry, though; it will all have faded back to my standard scary white by next week.

Today was the day of the swimming carnival at my work and I was one of the photographers. It was quite a fun day, really. And usually the photographer manages to escape most of the photos, but people kept taking my camera away and turning it directly on me. Ack.

Still, I'm sure I looked fetching in my bright red singlet top, not-quite-matching skirt, Coke cap and red cape.

Yes, red cape.

Well hey - I'm in red house, so I might as well support it by dressing strangely. In public. Even my sunburn ensured I was completely co-ordinated with my red outfit. And a bonus, I have sunburn on my feet that follows the pattern of my cute red shoes.

Before I go to find some more aloe vera, I shall leave you all with my fivedotnerds video for this week. Enjoy!

I got up early on Thursday morning to post my vlog, after staying up far too late the night before, editing the thing. Did you know Windows Movie Maker really doesn’t like it when you add narration to a movie? Up until the point you do that, it behaves just fine. Once you begin narrating things, it sulks.

And crashes.

Surely my voice isn’t that bad? You know, Movie Maker isn’t exactly doing great things for my confidence here...

So, I could tell you a great big long sob story about how I got up early just to upload this video, only to have YouTube jerk me around and refuse to process it for ten hours. Oh, the angst. Basically, I could have slept in instead, since I ended up having to re-upload the cursed thing when I got home after work.

Stupid best-laid plans...

Anyway, here’s my vlog for this week. I hope you all enjoy it, or let it make you think, or otherwise derive something from it. I’m always open to constructive criticism, too.

Oh, still on the constructive criticism thing: if you have any suggestions for things you’d like to see us do or cover as a channel, please shout out! At the moment, we’re trying to work out exactly what we’d like to do with this channel, so more suggestions are entirely welcome.

And talking about bushfire appeals (which I now am), don't forget to shop at Coles today! And if you're feeling like some new clothes, go to Jeanswest tomorrow, as they're donating all profits from sales on Saturday to a bushfire appeal. If anyone knows of any other places doing this, please comment.

And finally, I hope you all stay safe and have a lovely, lazy weekend. :)

Yes, it's that time again when I force you all to watch as I make an idiot out of myself on the internets. Huzzah! And I make even more of an idiot of myself this time, because this is my punishment video. Said punishment was dictated by [livejournal.com profile] theemdash, [livejournal.com profile] sopdetly and [livejournal.com profile] katilara for the very modest crime of going over the four minute time limit by the tiniest little bit.

One minute and forty-six seconds is the tiniest little bit in my book.

Also, I thought it was more of a guideline than a rule, but there you go. We are not pirates, we are fivedotnerds.

My punishment consisted of three parts: firstly, I had to spend the main part of my vlog facing in the wrong direction; secondly, I was required to provide a dramatic re-enactment of my national anthem; and finally, I was to finish off by providing everyone with pictures of Australian animals.

It was kinda fun, actually. Don't tell anyone. :D And here it is...

I wasn't the only one being punished, though - [livejournal.com profile] surferartchick suffered as well. Watch as she proves to us that she's not a couch here.

I'm still after questions about writing, too. Anything from how to decide how long your paragraphs should be to how to format dialogue. Anything. I have all this knowledge in my head and I figure it's time I started sharing it before my brain explodes or something.

It was 43°C here today. That's 109.4°F, if you prefer. Today, there's a possibility it may reach 45°C. Or 113°F. Now, I quite like the heat but even I think that's pushing it.

On top of this, I was greeted by a strange, fan-like sound when I arrived home yesterday. Turns out the central heating system had decided to blow air through the vents. Not hot air, thankfully, but it was doing this in defiance of the fact that it was turned off. And all of my glares and threats had absolutely no impact on it, the cursed thing.

Turning it off at the mains worked somewhat better, even though it meant we were apparently risking the overheat switching on (according to the instruction book). Which, by the way, is the stupidest instruction book ever. Nowhere does it say, Oh, hey, if your fan comes on randomly, it's because of this or even OMG, your fan came on even though it's switched off?? PANIC! YOU'RE ALL GOING TO DIE! OF CENTRAL HEATING.

At least the air-con behaves more maturely.

And in a rampant break with tradition, I actually posted my vlog on a Wednesday instead of a Thursday. This is what returning to work does to you: it completely screws up your schedule. And here it is...

I'm deadly serious about the questions, too. Please ask me some! Ask me questions about writing so I can answer them in future blogs! Ask me hundreds! You can either do it there or here, I don't mind. I would love it above all things to be able to talk about writing and maybe to help some people out along the way.

I hope you all enjoy it (even though it's filmed from a really horrible angle... :|).

And now, I am off to work.

Well, I did mention it in my first vlog: I like shiny things.

And I have a new shiny thing.

New Computer

(Can you see my webcam sitting on the box beside the computer? Doesn't it look like it's staring right at you? I swear, the thing watches me...)

This lovely, shiny thing is replacing my old desktop, which was dodgy from the word go. On the up side, it had the entire Office 2003 suite on it. On the down side, I'm not sure it was entirely legal...

And now, on a completely random note, I would like to know why I look at the keyboard, note where the delete key is... and then press the home key instead. IT IS ANNOYING.

It feels weird to be without a desktop computer. I've always had a desktop computer. It's not as though this one's all that portable, though - it's a desktop replacement computer, after all. I'm not going to be carting it with me to work or anything.

No, that's what my netbook's for. :D

And in other news, I have already recorded my vlog A DAY IN ADVANCE. I'm worried. The last minute is when I do things, not a day in advance. I may have doomed us all to... doom.
katiefoolery: (The open road awaits)
First, some correspondence.

Dear Gillette,

Contrary to your claims, five blades are not, in fact, better than three.  Please to be giving me back the significant amounts of money I parted with in order to uncover this lie.
(Might as well start with the classy one, right?)

Dear LJ Voice Post,

You fail!  No, you fail.  Don't come at me with your reasonable arguments about actually entering my phone number in the correct international fashion or saving more than just one Voice Post number to my phone.  You.  Fail.

It's just lucky you're ceasing to fail now.
(Completely LJ's fault.  Really.)

Dear CountryLink,

FAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAIIIIIILLLLLLL.  So much fail it's impossible to encompass its magnitude with a mere word.  First, you make me wait almost forty minutes for a delayed train in forty degree heat.  (Forty degrees Celsius, people.  One hundred and four degrees Fahrenheit.)  In forty degree heat, I say, on a little platform with only a tiny bit of shade to help keep cool.  IT DID NOT HELP.  And then, not content with this, you arrived in the city NINETY-FIVE minutes later than you were meant to.  NINETY-FIVE.  Seriously.
(*is still shaking fist over this*)

And now for the picspam... )

Just a few choice pictures from my recent two trips to Beechworth.  And with any luck, I should also be embedding my latest fivedotnerds video right about here:

katiefoolery: (fivedotnerds)
It's Thursday! Again! This means it's time for my Wednesday vlog to be posted, of course. And here it is:

It's long.

I thought, when I'd finished, that I'd been talking for a couple of minutes.

"Oh yes, indeed you have," agreed Windows Media Player. "Five and a half minutes, to be exact."

And then I had stuff to add at the beginning and end, of course. So it's closer to six minutes now. I'm really not sure how I managed to ramble on for that long.

Things of note: frizziness of hair. Oh, how I love this. Especially since I put stuff in it this morning that was supposed to fight this frizziness on its own terms. If there's any frizz-fighting going on, it's at a level far too subtle to be noticed by human eyes.

Also: background noises! I could not believe how many there were when I played the video back. Seriously. You can count for yourselves, but I heard: 1. computer fan, 2. random traffic outside, 3. garbage collection, 4. various types of birds, and 5. bonus aeroplane flying over at one point.

Anyway, please watch and enjoy and if you're on YouTube: SUBSCRIBE!! And let me know your username so I can friend you.
katiefoolery: (fivedotnerds)
Well, they're certainly going. Two down, three to go.

My very first vlog is live. And audible! Amazing, but true. Look here for proof:

And yes, it says "WEDNESDAY" in the title in complete defiance of the fact that it's THURSDAY here. However, it's still Wednesday in many, many parts of the world so I maintain that my video is not late. On the contrary: it's just being considerate and inclusive of those of you who have yet to venture into today.

It's strange how quickly you become accustomed to new things. The first time I recorded myself, I felt like an absolute idiot. Which, admittedly, is not that far removed from my normal way of thinking. However. I think I'm even growing indifferent to watching myself on the screen as I edit. Things always seem so much harder before you actually begin them.

So, since I obviously haven't done this much before (or, uh, ever...), I'm open to advice. What should I be doing? What shouldn't I be doing? What am I doing well? What needs improvement? Help me to become better at this whole thing!
katiefoolery: (Get your words out!)
Well, they are!

And by everyone, I mean [livejournal.com profile] sopdetly and [livejournal.com profile] katilara. Which is pretty much everyone, when you think about it.

And what, exactly, is everyone doing? Well, from what I can gather, everyone is having slight panics about recording themselves, thinking about what to say while recording themselves and then uploading said recordings to the internet.

At which point, we run away screaming and hide in a corner while quivering in abject fear.

Or something.

Because, for some reason unknown even to myself, I agreed to take part in a regular vlog as an addition to this whole GYWO thing. There are five of us: [livejournal.com profile] surferartchick, [livejournal.com profile] sopdetly, [livejournal.com profile] katilara, [livejournal.com profile] theemdash and myself. You'll be able to see us by watching or subscribing to the YouTube channel here: FiveDotNerds. The first one's up already! I'm just off to watch it myself.

But before I go - here's me making my test video. Just in case you've ever wondered what I look like or how I sound or if I look like a complete idiot while staring into a webcam. The answer to the third: why, yes, yes I do.

Oh, and I talk too quietly, so the volume needs to be turned UP right after the intro.

Aaaaand it served its purpose and now it's gone.

P.S. I wrote actual words last night! :D
