I always try to keep a notebook and pen on hand, after one nasty occasion when I absolutely HAD to write down an idea and didn't have any way to do so.
TV is so distracting! Even if I'm not watching it. Even if I'm listening to music through my headphones to block the TV out! It's very frustrating. And I definitely share the looking-over-my-shoulder thing. I just can't stand it, no matter what I'm writing.
Do you have conveniently illegible handwriting that will disguise whatever you've written? That often helps.
