You have to love irony, especially when it ensures that the day after you write a post about how nobody’s done anything about the water leak in your front yard and driveway, a whacking great truck bearing a digger and two men to work it turns up and promptly fixes said leak. It was an absolute delight to walk out to the car today and not have to wade through a stream of water.

But aside from musings on irony and delight at a dry driveway and yard, I’ve been thinking about the way I used to read as a child and the way I used to want to be a writer for young adult. I suppose these ponderings have been inspired by the Premier’s Reading Challenge and my browsing through the pages of the ambassadors and occasionally visiting their websites. Yesterday, I was recalling the way I used to read in every spare minute of the day and deep into the night. I hope at least kids today still like to hide under the covers at night with a torch to keep reading long past their bedtime. Of course, now I can read as long as I want or at least until my Timothy gets cranky and starts poking me in the leg and telling me to turn off the light, otherwise I'll only get two hours' sleep.

This naturally led to thoughts of my not-so-distant desires to be a young adult author. This is not to say that they've vanished, simply that I've made an attempt to start writing for myself, rather than anybody else. If these stories-for-myself turn out to appeal to a young adult audience, then that's all well and good. However, for some reason, I suddenly felt like writing a story for kids. There I was, covering one of the books in my pile of Millions of Books to be Catalogued, Processed and Covered by Last Thursday, when the desire suddenly hit me. I don't know what the story will be about, only that I'd like to write it as it's been a long time since I wrote a story for a young audience.

I think it could be fun.

However, I also think I should work on final drafts for Ever Again and the Nunnery story so I can start circulating them.

Thank goodness it's Thursday - the last day of my working week. It looks like I have a lot of writing to do this weekend.

irony indeed, but at least it's finally taken care of!

I think it's a cool idea to write for kids, I do hope you'll share the story ^_^. What age are you thinkig of writing for, since kids range...well, from 0 to teens at least lol. Have fun with it!

Hooray for reading with a torch! I did that until my parents pinched it. And the other one, and the other one,

and told me I couldn't read by the light of a glowworm *dastards*

and Hooray for plans! Even half-formed plans rock on dearest Bun! And I am in awe of young adult authors, cos writing without sex and violence doesn't seem to be something I can do *looks shocked* :p

I used to listen for the footsteps of my parents and switch my torch off until they'd gone past my door. It was good fun. Not that it was easy to read a book with under the covers, but it was worth it.

And you may be pleased to discover that there's quite often sex and violence in books for young adults and those books ALWAYS cause trouble for parents and librarians. It's the same for drug-use. Nobody ever thinks of the library staff.

I'll certainly share a snippet when I write it, good Naelany. If it's any good, that is. I think the story will be written for kids aged 10 to 12, as there's a magazine in Australia that accepts submissions for stories for that age level. It's certainly an interesting age to write for.

Anyway, as I was saying, I'm glad to see you pushing yourself with the writing. I need to do the same!

I haven't touched my children's book story since NaNo ended. I really hope I didn't burn out with all that writing. (grin) I doubt it. It's just been crazy around here.

Glad to hear your leak got fixed. That sort of thing is so annoying! We're having flood levels here due to rain... (sigh)

Tehe, everynight I used to wait until mum and dad had gone to bed, and then sneak out and read on the toilet. :D

And it's much appreciated by your librarians, good Nomes. It's more the people who write books that end up being controversial who aren't considering the librarians. Why don't people think of us before letting the muse move them? ;)

Hehe! I can just imagine your parents wondering what on earth you were doing in the loo. "She's been in there for a long time. Should we see if something's wrong?"
