I thought my plan to write ten thousand words in ten weeks was failing miserably. I was sitting around, honestly thinking I hadn’t done any writing for the last few weeks, when I suddenly realised that I was a complete idiot. What, I asked myself, were those painful hours spent breaking down Black Fiddle into individual scenes? Did they count for nothing?
The answer, quite simply, is “no”. They most certainly didn’t count for nothing. They definitely count for something.
It’s not a lot of fun, this scene breakdown. Essentially, I’m re-reading the entire book and summarising it into scenes. There was one chapter a while back that comprised one long and rather dramatic scene. Three and a half thousand words were turned into two hundred and fifty. It was a bit depressing, really.
While it might not be fiction, it’s writing and it’s hard work, so I’m counting all of those words for these past four weeks. This means that my attempt to stop being lazy and to write Ten Thousand words in Ten Weeks is actually on track. Amazingly. Tomorrow marks the end of the sixth week and – thanks to my scene breakdown – I’m already on 6,538 words.
It’s not good enough for these characters in my head, though. They demand to be released and they won’t stop bugging me until I let them out, damned noisy things that they are. Still, I don’t have a real problem with that. If I ended up writing more than ten thousand words in my ten weeks, I wouldn’t exactly be disappointed.

on 2006-07-04 01:00 pm (UTC)You amaze me. If I was allowed to count the things I've written in my head since you started, the character conversations I've rehearsed out loud on the bus (by accident), and all my lj entries, I might, might be averaging 500 words per week. I really want to be more like you. Anybody want to borrow an almost 4 year old for a bit so his mom can write?
I admit, I've also killed about forty hours so far replaying Baldur's Gate 2, but this time with a female elf specialized ranger. Okay, that's a terrible excuse.

on 2006-07-04 01:16 pm (UTC)Actually, your excuse is a lot better than: I didn't do any writing today because I was aimlessly mucking around on the internet... A LOT better.

on 2006-07-04 01:21 pm (UTC)Oh, but I do that too! I have an hour set aside every morning to catch up on lj stuff and so on, but I almost always go over time and th3en wonder why I get the Wee Boy to daycare so late every day!
Sheesh. I'd say the Internet was evil if it didn't allow me to meet cool inspiring other writers such as yourself! :-)
