At least eight thousand words...
Jul. 8th, 2008 07:39 pmSo, a subtle comment was just thrown my way, relating to June, the sixteenth day therein and how my most "recent" LJ post happened to fall thereon. Why yes, that was almost a month ago. I've been doing things.
Well, sort of.
Mostly I've been on holidays. That's hard work, that is.
I also went to visit the parents and the boy and the Sonia, during which visit I overcame my laziness enough to take some photos during the course of an hour-long walk. You may now all gaze upon them in lieu of a post containing actual substance.
Firstly, in case anyone has ever wondered what Beechworth actually looks like, here's a fairly indicative image for you:

The business with the clock tower towards the end of the street is the incredibly modest-looking post office. Please also notice the rain. It had been pouring down for hours overnight after not raining for weeks, possibly months. This always happens when I visit.
And now, the aforementioned clock tower of aforementioned post office:

Beechworth is also fully armed against attack:

There are two cannon, because you just never know when one's going to fail in the face of an invading army. Or possibly a gaol break-out...
...from this gaol, perhaps (since it's just down the road from the cannon... as well as my parents):

Luckily, it closed in 2004 after 140 years of service, so a break-out's pretty unlikely.
The main point of my walk was actually to take some photos of this:

It's the facade of the former Ovens Hospital, once the only hospital between Melbourne and Sydney. It was demolished some time ago, but the facade was salvaged and restored.
It makes for a good silhouette from the back, too:

Also, no walking tour of Beechworth is complete without coming across a random giant hen pecking about on the footpath. Apparently.

Seriously, that photo gives you no idea of how huge the hen really was. I thought it was a goose when I first saw it. And then I thought of Christmas dinner... :D
At no extra cost, please have this photo of the inside of the Melba tunnel on Eastlink:

Coming soon: substance. I hope.

on 2008-07-08 10:34 am (UTC)Seriously. The signs told us to turn the radio on, and then suddenly there's this female voice informing us that the left lane was closed and the speed limit reduced to 60. It was quite disturbing.
Also, Beechworth is beautiful, and now I want to go to the bakery.

on 2008-07-08 01:49 pm (UTC)I shall try to be on tomorrow, depending on how I'm feeling; I'm not the greatest company right now.
Actually, that's probably a good reason to get back onto msn. Uh, that is, not to inflict bad company on people but to improve my mood with interaction. :D

on 2008-07-08 02:00 pm (UTC)It was a seriously huge hen. And there weren't any others around - I think it must have eaten them all.
And just for my evil twin, I uploaded some more cannon (http://www.flickr.com/photos/buneater/2649056845/) goodness (http://www.flickr.com/photos/buneater/2649878684/). Mmm, heavy artillery...
