The Challenge
Apr. 14th, 2006 10:31 amI'm going to do some writing this weekend. That's it. That's my challenge. I like it because it's simple and the goal is obvious.
The only bit I don't like is where I'm writing it down and posting it on the interent for all the world to see. That sort of thing tends to raise expectations. Mind you, I'm pretty sure expectations around me are sunk pretty low at the moment, so it wouldn't take much to raise them.
This challenge of mine arose when I was on the bus this evening, having successfully taken a bus, a train, another bus, a further bus and a final bus all on the one two hour ticket. There I was, feeling abstractly proud of myself for carrying this feat off, when I suddenly thought about doing some writing... for myself. It suddenly hit me that most of the writing I do is for other reasons: I write a piece for LorF, I write something for my Timothy, I write something else to allay suspicions that I'm not actually a writer so much as the world's greatest procrastinator... And even though I enjoy these things and they're very good reasons for writing, it struck me that it's been a long time since I wrote something just for myself; something that I never intended to be seen by anybody else. Something for me alone.
Hence, my challenge. Instead of spending the Easter break on the internet or on the couch watching TV, I will do some writing for myself.
That's it.
Simple.
