Firstly, may I just say:

Thank-you, LJ, for changing the default setting of the cursèd navigation bar to "on".  You know, there is a reason why I don’t have the navigation bar switched on and that reason (which I happen to think is a very good one) is that it is a hideous abomination and I hate having to look at it.  Ever.

Please don’t do that again.

If my kind friends and readers out there would be so good as to add a heaping of sarcasm to those two paragraphs above, I would be most grateful.

Secondly, I want to thank a student who inadvertently gave me a rather good chuckle.  She had added a title to her list of books for the Victorian Premier’s Reading Challenge and it was ever so slightly incorrect.  Instead of Secret Friends’ Stuff, she had typed Secret Fried Stuff.  Secret Fried Stuff... I can’t love it enough.  It conjures up an image of someone being served a plate of mysterious objects covered in batter.  But is that a prawn or a piece of chewing gum?  A potato cake or a frisbee?  Who knows!  Who dares to taste the Secret Fried Stuff?

Ack, I hate it! I hate the stupid things in Blogger sites and I detest them here, too. Actually, it wasn't really the fact that I had to look at it, more that they'd overridden my decision not to look at it. I guess it's all linked to this new thing where the default account is sponsored and so on.

I am totally, 100%, absolutely behind you on the navigation bar issue!!!

And I think it's horrid that it's now the 'default' setting when one starts a new journal -- and that they arbitrarily changed all the existing journals to display it, as well! (What nerve.)

They were 'pimping' it for ages. (And may well still be doing so.) But how does that give them the right to just change it???

I'm more than a tiny bit annoyed with several of the changes recently at LJ. But then I've made that pretty clear in my own journal, I imagine. (smile)

(And because I help run a community that tries to help people 'get' LJ, that just means more work for me...)

That was what I resented most of all - the fact they overrode a decision I had already made. If I wanted the navigation bar up there, I would have put it there! Bah.

I'm also not fond of the fact that the default account is "sponsored", rather than "free". So much for giving people the choice to have ads on their layout or not...

Oh so that's what it is...I wondered...

I've fixed it now! Hooray!

Yep - they didn't even announce it in the news, or anything. You know - by the way, we're going to override your settings without asking you...

Gah.

Moments like these make me want to set up my own blog. :P

I like the navigation bar :) But when I turned it on, it didn't work. I had to try several times for it to work...

Ah, I'm just not a fan. I'd rather not see it at all. :) It also tends to muck up the code of some people's layouts, which is not very nice. Silly LJ.

It's just sticking out the end of my header! Yuk!

But I actually came here to talk about Secret Fried Stuff. Because that is just hilarious!

The Secret Fried stuff is brilliant, isn't it? I kept thinking about it laughing all afternoon.

Ack - it's pushed your entries down as well! Stupid thing that it is. You can turn it off in your "manage info" section, under "display" or something.

Yes! Dear God, I almost pitched a fit when I saw that thing up there. An overreaction perhaps, but I was irritated beyond all comprehension by it. If I wanted it there I'd have put it there already, stupid LJ.

Eh, I overreacted, too. Just... just... how rude! And they didn't even mention that it was going to happen, they just did it.

I wish you could choose, as a user, whether you wanted to see it or not. That makes more sense to me.

It didn't show up on mine... was it supposed to? Hate the ghastly thing too. Frustrating shit of a thing.

and your local fish and chip shop deep fries mars bars, now THAT is certainly Weird Fried Stuff but maybe not so secret :P

Sometimes it doesn't show up. I had a look at it on my previous layout, when it was first announced, and it just pushed everything down and remained invisible. It depends on the coding. I saw a layout today where the navigation bar totally screwed up someone's lovely design.

I still can't believe you haven't seen deep fried mars bars! You have to try one eventually. They may sound disgusting, but they are ridiculously delicious.

Great, I accidentally pushed 'Hide his message' instead of 'Get this thing to go to hell' and now I don't know how to get rid of it, because my 'Edit/Remove' bit is gone. Damnit.

Go to Manage, Info and select "viewing options". You can elect to turn it off in there. :)

Ah, thank you! The same thing happened to me as well, and I was wondering how to get that stupid thing out of my sight. It obstructed my background! Maybe if it had pushed everything down an inch and taken up space that way, I wouldn't have minded because it is an easy way of doing thing, but ergh! So ugly!

You're welcome, good Galli. It really is an ugly thing. There are some useful aspects to it, but I don't think I'll ever use it, especially after seeing what it does to some layouts. Silly LJ people.

What's the deal with that nav bar? It's not like it's really of any use, most of the links in it are already present on the screen. It seems a bit superfluous.
And it's a hidious grey with a squashed up user image.

*resolutely turns off*

I hate the way it uglifies the user image! We don't need it there - I'm pretty sure we know what our default icon looks like. And it's ugly! Bah!
