Powerless

katiefoolery: (Don't panic!)
[personal profile] katiefoolery
I spent most of this morning without power.  Gosh it was great.  One minute, I was eagerly popping my fruit muffins in the toaster, the next I was powerless.

Well, apart from the lights.  The lights were working fine.

Not so the toaster, the central heating (waaah!), Bindi’s hairdryer, the fridge and anything else you care to mention that involves a power-point in any way.

Thank goodness I’d just made a cup of tea or I would have gone insane.

I’d relate the following couple of hours of pointless phone calls and frustrated waiting but a) it’s really boring, and, b) would involve far too many mentions of how damned cold I was.  I was freezing!  The weather had been looking up at the start of week, but it had taken a turn for the worse and seemed to be mocking the whole situation.

So... cold...

Oh, did I mention that I couldn’t even turn on a computer?  No warming glow of the monitor, no internet.

So... very... cold...  I think some of the shivers might have been withdrawal symptoms from my beloved internet, too.

So, there I was, wrapped in too many clothes for comfort (including a scarf wound about six times around my neck), reading my new manga until my fingers were too cold to hold things up any more.

When the electrician finally arrived, he said such inspiring things as:

“Oh, I really hoped it wouldn’t be one of these types of fuse-boxes.”

And:

“Damn, I don’t have any of these fuses.”

And then we worked out that the toaster had caused all this trouble.  The toaster.  The stupid, piece-of-rubbish four-slice toaster that's too narrow to fit anything but the slimmest bread slices and that toasts things unevenly anyway.  That pointless, frustrating, AGGRAVATING toaster caused all of this trouble.  So now we have to dispose of it.  At this point in time, I can’t decide if I’d rather burn it or smash it with something heavy.  Both options are incredibly attractive.

In non-toaster related news, I’m enjoying the new range of styles that LJ has given us, courtesy of VOX.  It turns out they’re going to start leaning towards CSS customisation now, so I might actually have a chance of customising it to suit my purposes!

I sympathise!!!

I've just spent two fifteen minute periods standing/walking about in the rain, on errands for the Grandmother.

I swear my ear wax froze solid!

That raises another good point - why does it always rain just when you have to go outside? Yesterday, it was cloudly but rainless all day... up until the minute I had to leave to catch my bus. Stupid irony!

*shakes fist*

Hope your ear wax melts soon. That sounds uncomfortable.

Eep! Lucky you made a tea! And thanks for mentioning that we can use the vox layouts... that's one of the very few things I really liked about it, were the lovely little layouts.

I know! I was so grateful for that cuppa. Insanity would have set in if I hadn't been able to partake of my beloved caffeine...

The new layouts are lovely, aren't they? And the best thing is that I can use CSS to re-style it after my own whimsy. I'm so glad they came along just as I was making complicated plans to hunt down the S2 language and kill it. CSS is something I can understand

My only issue so far is that there's no real breaks to the entries, and they just seem to blend together... especially my friends page :P I'm hoping that they'll add some more customisations soon.. I'm a bit iffy on how to go about attempting to customise it at the moment :P

That's the same thing that's bugging me at the moment. I want to emphasise the subjects more and put a bit more space between the entries. I'm hoping I can comb through the CSS and find a way to do that. First, I have to browse through seventy-two different themes to find the one I want to work with...

There's just too many of them isn't there? :P I think I'm happy with my layout. I chose 'Unity Blue'.

That's a nice one. There are just too many to choose from!

I found a flaw, though. If you go to the calendar view, the only year linked is the one you're on. So even though it lists all of the years I've been on LJ, it doesn't actually link to any of them. It's quite odd.

Posted by [identity profile] peachynat3.livejournal.com
Yeah, I've found that out also. But if you type in the year, it's okay. Like you said, it just doesn't link to them. I think since they just got up there's probably a number of bugs they have to fix.

They fixed it already! That was so quick.

Whoa! i noticed what you're doing, your viewing page is all different... you're whole lj is different! given up on the winter header/last style? this one is kinda nifty (I say this now, and click back in two minutes to find you working on another style :P) Is the tag view different?

on 2006-08-25 07:44 am (UTC)
Posted by [identity profile] katiefoolery.livejournal.com
No, I haven't given up on the header/Winter theme. I just need to browse through SEVENTY-TWO DIFFERENT THEMES before I can find a base I'm happy to work with. :D Seriously, seventy-two! And they don't have any previews, so I just have to randomly select them and see how they look.

And yes - it's S2, so I have a proper tag view!

Tim did make the rather logical suggestion of simply boiling some water on the stove but I don't want to hear logic at times like those!

*looks sheepish*

Ooo...purty I like the new layout!

Want to borrow a 2x4 for the toaster?

Thank-you! I wish I could take the credit for it but I'll wait until I've actually done something to it for that. :)

And yes. Yes, I do want to borrow a 2x4 for the toaster. That's just perfect.

But it's purty! Almost convinced me to go paid :D

P.S Bunne, both you and I need to go to bed :p

I vote for smash. Then you get the lovely chiming sound as bits of plastic and metal go zinging off in all directions, heralding the demise of said useless toaster.

Preferably with a rubber mallet as it gives you a sort of cartoony feel in the end. =3

*pets* Is your heat back now? I hate losing heat. Though, I hate paying for it too which is why the heat stays off until I can't walk without shivering. XD

Yes, I definitely have my heat back on. I absolutely detest being cold and I am prepared to pay anything to make sure I'm nice and warm. You're braver than I am in that respect! :D

You're right about the smashing. It would be so much more satisfying than just setting fire to it.

I had this image of the Toaster from Red Dwarf being smashed for killing all competing electronics, and it gave me a happy warm feeling.

I hope that your heater is better now, and that you are not so cold! *snugs you* Eeevil toaster. You and your kind shall pay!

Hah, yes! At least my toaster didn't try to talk to me. Stupid thing. It shall die!

The heating's back on so I'm much happier. :D

Bad toaster, no donut!!! *smites the toaster*
*hands you a cup of steaming tea* Do you have fingerless gloves, per chance?

on 2006-08-25 11:43 pm (UTC)
Posted by [identity profile] katiefoolery.livejournal.com
I'm sure I have some gloves like that somewhere. The only problem is that I usually uncover them during Summer and think how handy they'd be for Winter. And then, when it gets colder, I completely forget where I put them...
